Birmingham Approach

The Way We Support Wellbeing

Here at Birmingham Primary School, student wellbeing is at the forefront of everything that we do. Our aim is to build resilient kids who strive to have respectful relationships with others.

At Birmingham Primary School, we pride ourselves on our strong Wellbeing Program which includes Respectful Relationships, elements of the Berry Street Education Model and our school values.

Respectful Relationships promotes respect, gender equality, and helps students learn how to build healthy relationships. The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resources support us to provide social and emotional learning across all year levels.

The Berry Street Education Model strategies support students’ self-regulation, relationships and wellbeing to increase student engagement and significantly improve academic achievement.

Our approach to student wellbeing ensures that all students are exposed to age-appropriate material that targets lifelong skills such as emotional awareness and problem solving. Student wellbeing is heavily embedded into all aspects of our curriculum and is taught through Literacy, Numeracy and Inquiry.

What does wellbeing look like at our school?

Zones of Regulation - Junior

Emotional Awareness

We use the Zones of Regulation across the whole school. This gives our staff and students a common language to communicate with each other. Throughout your child’s time here, they will explore different emotions and learn how to articulate their feelings.

Green Zone Plan

Green Zone Plans

As part of developing our students’ abilities to communicate their feelings, each child has a ‘Green Zone Plan’. The green zone is referred to as our learning zone (when we feel happy and ready). Students develop a plan that identifies strategies that work for them or tools they could try to get back into their green zone.

Buddies Program

We are very proud of our Whole School Buddies Program.

Every child across our school has a buddy. They meet once a fortnight to complete an activity together. These activities are centered around our school values and wellbeing model.

Buddy pairings are:

  • Prep & Grade 3
  • Prep & Grade 6
  • Grade 1 & 4
  • Grade 2 & 5

Transition Program

In Term 4, all students across the school take part in four, 40 minute transition sessions.

As a class, students move up to the next year level to get a feeling for what the future year will look like. They can get to know the teachers and ask any questions that they may have.
